Artist Statement
In art school, I was taught to pick one medium, stay in my lane, and become known for that kind of work. In my career, I have neither agreed with nor been good at following this sentiment. Even as a new artist, I quickly found that branching out and trying new media sparked powerful inspiration, introduced new techniques into familiar media, and enriched my artistic experience.
As an undergraduate, I had the pleasure of studying and creating a to-scale replica of Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase,” a masterpiece in the cubist art movement. I fell deeply in love with Duchamp’s style and my replica still hangs prominently in my Chicago home. I have leveraged these abstraction techniques and made them my own in order to present my viewpoint on a variety of topics.
My art is abstractions of my experiences as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. I have designed my pieces to challenge our conceptions of gender, sexuality, and mental health. Rather than specifically delve into my artistic intentions behind each piece, I prefer to leave interpretation up to the viewer. All I like to divulge is that each piece is meant to make you do a double take and rethink your beliefs, as I depict the queer in the quotidian.
